Directing Light At Grand Central Station

In collaboration with Cassandra Bartels

The design aims to provide calm private spaces in the
busy public Grand Central Station. The model combines ideas explored by both group mates: the filtering of artificial and natural light to raise awareness of these individual light sources, and the effects of an individual on the greater surrounding lighting environment. Three different spaces of varying degrees of privacy are created to maximize or direct light in from these light sources. The use of filter frames to create a walkable space on the upper level filters light from above to create a calmer lighting environment below. Caustics are also introduced to the design by implementing a circular body of water in the middle of the space.
