Beyond the Stacks

Beyond the Stacks addresses a problem that was illuminated when limited access was granted to Barnard college’s indoor spaces. Without usable classrooms, dining halls, studios, and conference rooms, it was clear that better utilization of Barnard’s limited outdoor space is necessary. In particular, the limited performance spaces in Barnard is a problem that needs to be addressed and has served as the source of inspiration for this project. The expansion to the Milstein Center terraces gives the once static surfaces new functions. The enhanced topography created through rectilinear canopy structures gives the terraces new life, making them suitable for anything from public performances to one-on-one meetings. There are no limits to what the space can be used for, giving the library a life beyond the stacks
